Budapest is the capital of Hungary and has a population of some 1.75 million. It is bisected ny the huge River Danube. The 19th century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda side of the city with the flat Pest side.

"The Shoes". A very poignant memorial to several thousand Jews and others who were executed in the early 1940s on the edge of the Danube, their bodies falling into the river. They were forced to remove their shoes first.
